Johnson’s Report – March

March18a

Back in the old days, take that as far back as you want, when you wanted to build your castle you found the biggest, steepest rock around.  Below is a picture of the Rock of Monaco.    Surrounded by defensive walls and bastions that still have their original ancient flavor the buildings on top of the Rock were either build or significantly rehabbed in the last 200 years.  The taller building at the far sea-side end is the home of one of Europe’s largest aquariums and the Oceanographic Institute headed by Jacques Cousteau for many years.  The building itself is magnificent not to mention the extensive live aquariums and historical collections inside.  Across the street is the Cathedral of Monaco.  Built in 1875 on the site of a 13th century church this is the place where Princess Grace was married and buried.  A short stroll through narrow cobble stone streets with outdoor cafes takes you to the Royal Palace where you can take a tour, watch the changing of the guards or just enjoy the view.  I made the round trip, about 4 miles from our convention hotel the Monte Carlo Bay early one morning and found it delightful.  My wife thought I was nuts.  So, split the difference, get a lift up to the Rock and walk back.  If you take the right route there are plenty of places to eat and possibly do some big time shopping on the way back.
