It is also the largest city in Austria with a population of about 1.757 million people. It has been called home by many famous musicians, artists, royalty and even some actors, including names you still hear today.

Vienna History

Michael Hainisch was Austria’s first president, after the fall of the monarchy at the end of World War I from 1920 – 1928. His time in office was spent improving the dire situation Austria was in after the war, developing the agricultural sector, tourism and encouraged the electrification of the railway.

George von Trapp was an Austrian naval officer who had been a part of World War II and was knighted by the Austrian Government. You may recognize him as the father of the Trapp Family Singers who inspired the movie The Sound of Music.

Franz Joseph was Emperor of Austria from December 1848 until his passing in November 1916. Born in Vienna in 1830, he was one of the longest-serving monarchs in history. He was a driving force behind numerous important buildings in Vienna. Franz Joseph inhabited Schonbrunn Palace and the Hofburg Complex. Both locations allow tours, taking you through the lifestyle of this famous Emperor.
